How to make your new year's eve feel special

How to have a great new years eve without leaving your home

As with almost everything in 2020, New Year’s Eve will feel quite different from previous years. With most states and territories having restrictions on public celebrations of some sort, set a festive table, invite a select group of your dearest and celebrate the coming year without leaving your home.

Whether you’re toasting a brighter year ahead (or offering good riddance to 2020), have a look through this list and see if any of these ideas spark inspiration.

1. Plan a special meal

You can cook for yourself or use it as an opportunity to support a favourite local restaurant by ordering in and taking a break from the kitchen. Either way, use your nicer set of dinnerware and cutlery, if you have them, and take the time to decorate your table.

A bit of effort can help make a dinner at home with loved ones feel like a special occasion.

2. Make new year’s decorations

Taking down the Christmas tree and decor can leave the house feeling a bit drab. Why not try more neutral holiday decorations, that can cheer up the house for New Year’s Eve and herald in the new year with a bang.

3. Make something indulgent

Make it a family activity or enjoy the hands-on process of making your own New Year’s dessert. Here’s an easy recipe to google: Ganache truffles.

To make truffles you combine melted chocolate with heavy cream and any flavouring of your choosing (like orange zest, dried cherries, chai spices or raisins soaked in rum). Once the mixture has cooled in the fridge, take spoonful of the ganache and roll them in cocoa powder or dried coconut for an impressive New Year’s Eve dessert.

4. Go for a walk or a run

Whether it’s simply to take a break from being inside your home or to gain some space and reflect on the outgoing year, go for a walk or run around your favourite park or running track.

You might find it a useful meditative exercise to take note of any small changes you would like to make to improve your finances or health as you start the new year.

5. Donate your excess

Given how difficult this year has been for many members of the community, now is a good time to donate where you can. Look up your local food banks online and then, check individual food bank sites to see drop-off hours and locations and to determine what they need.

While all food banks take canned and non-perishable goods, some may accept other donations as well or specify items they’re running low on.

As the year ends, it’s also a good time to clear items in your wardrobe. If you have clothing that you haven’t worn for the whole of 2020, it may be a case of you not needing it at all and by donating, someone less fortunate will be able to enjoy it.

6. Remember to be safe

While you’re likely planning to celebrate indoors, weather permitting, to reduce the risk of any community transmission it may be nice to toast the end of 2020 with a few friends, extended family or neighbours in an outdoor setting, if it’s allowed in your state.

7. Avoid the fireworks crowd

Whether you plan spent New Year’s Eve lounging in your PJs or getting dressed up for a special New Year’s dinner, chances are you’re still planning to watch the fireworks put on by your local council.

All the major TV networks have New Year’s Eve programming with top-name performers, and one of them will be showing your local fireworks live for you to enjoy from the comfort of your lounge and without having to fight for a vantage point.
